What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a non-invasive complementary health therapy that can be effective in promoting deep relaxation and wellbeing; by reducing stress in people’s lives can be key in optimising good health and building resilience. It is a touch therapy that is based on the theory that different points on the feet, lower leg, hands, face or ears correspond with different areas of the body and reflexologists work these points and areas.

It provides a period of time for relaxation where a client has one to one attention and an empathetic listening environment. Reflexology can be used safely alongside standard healthcare to promote better health for clients.

What is the main theory behind Reflexology?

That all the systems and organs of the whole body are mirrored or reflected in smaller peripheral areas, for example the feet, hands, ears and face. These can be seen in relation to the feet below:

A reflexologist works these reflected areas with their fingers, aiming to bring those areas back to balance and aiding the body to work as well as it can. Reflexology works on an individual basis and the reflexologist provides professional facilitation of your body’s own potential for well-being.

History of Reflexology

The art of reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, India and China, although this therapy was not introduced to the West until Dr William Fitzgerald developed ‘Zone therapy’ in the early 1900s. He believed that reflex areas on the feet and hands were linked to other areas and organs of the body within the same zone.

In the 1930s, the mother of Reflexology (Ingham) developed Zone therapy into what is now known as Reflexology. She believed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot is mirrored in the corresponding part of the body.

Is Reflexology suitable for me?

Reflexology can be received by anyone at any age, from new-born babies to those receiving end of life care, and everyone in between. However, occasionally, there may be times when it is not suitable to provide a treatment. The best way to find out if it is right for you, is to contact me by email or phone 07395 387303, where I will be more than happy to help.

Please note: Reflexology should not be used as an alternative to seeking medical advice.

Will Reflexology help me?

Any well-trained reflexologist, will not claim to cure, diagnose or prescribe. Reflexology is a very individual treatment which is tailored to you as a whole person, taking into account both physical and non-physical factors that might be affecting your wellbeing. The best way to find out is to try it!

Essentially, it is believed that reflexology helps the body to restore its balance naturally. Usually after a treatment, your tension may be reduced and you might feel relaxed. You may also notice you sleep better and find your mood and sense of well-being improve. Other aspects may also improve too but this happens on an individual basis.

How many treatments will I need?

Everyone is different and the response to Reflexology can be immediate or sometimes take longer than one appointment, but often benefits can be seen after 4-5 sessions. Regular weekly treatments are best for the body properly beginning the self-healing process, and following an initial consultation I will suggest the number of Reflexology sessions I think we should undertake.

What happens in a treatment?

Reflexology is performed entirely on the feet, ankles or hands, so the most you’ll have to do is take off your socks and roll up your trousers! During the treatment the client lies on their back on a reclining chair, supported by pillows and covered with a soft blanket to keep them warm.

And don’t worry - reflexology doesn't tickle! Many clients come to me with ticklish feet or worried about their feet being touched, but find they can relax and enjoy the benefits of Reflexology.

Does reflexology hurt?

You might find some areas feel sensitive to the touch, but Reflexology does not involve hard pressing in the way something like a sports massage might. As a therapist I will be aware of the status of your feet, noticing how they feel, the temperature and colour. All these things play a part in understanding which areas of your body - as reflected through your feet - require a bit more care and attention.

Can you diagnose my health problems?

Reflexologists cannot claim to diagnose or cure, but during a treatment we get 'feedback' as to which parts of the body are working well and which are not. Sometimes Reflexology will highlight a specific area which is struggling or working hard to maintain your wellbeing; if a particular reflex point shows this kind of reaction I'll discuss it with you at the end of the session.

Where are you located?

My treatment room is located in Heckington, Lincolnshire

Can I keep on having reflexology?

After an initial course of treatments many people choose to check in monthly for a top-up, to help maintain their general wellbeing, or as a scheduled 'de-stress'. Other clients will get back in touch if they start feeling aches and pains, arranging treatments as and when they need them.

About Me

I first experienced reflexology 30 years ago on holiday in Cornwall and absolutely fell in love with the treatment and how it made me feel. I continued to receive treatments on a regular basis whilst working 9-5 in an office. I loved the treatments so much, I decided to study reflexology and I signed up to the local college and studied for a year at Level 3 in Holistic Therapies which included reflexology.

15 years later and I had a daughter and triplet sons and life was busy to say the least. When they were old enough I decided to set up my own reflexology practice. To make sure I was up to date with the latest techniques and to challenge myself, I wanted to study the highest level of reflexology available. I qualified at Level 5 (L5 Dip) in Practioner Reflexology, at The Anahata College in Lincoln which is widely regarded as one of the best in the UK. The course covered a wide range of treatments including NEPIP, Hand Reflexology and Duopody and covered topics to include palliative and maternity care.
